The rebels assert that the loyalist attack on the Santander front was a costly failure, resulting in 1500 dead. The loyalist attacks on Lanercera and the Castroalen range were repulsed with machine-guns. SPANISH NON-COMBATANTS. EVACUATION BY BRITAIN. ASSISTANCE OF RED CROSS. (Official Wireless.) (Received July 31, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, July 30. At question time in the House of Commons Viscount Cranborne said that as the result of the service organised by the acting-British Consul with the assistance of the Red -Cross about 1000 Spanish non-combatants had been evacuated from Madrid via Valencia. Copyright. (Received July 31, 3 p.m.) LONDON, July 31. Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr G. H. Shakespeare, Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Admiralty, said it a British ship went into territorial waters sjie did so at her own risk. The Government was not prepared to intervene by force to prevent the capture >1 a British merchant ship which voluntarily placed herself within Spanish jurisdiction by entering Spanish waters, provided the capture was made with due regard to the universallyrecognised rules of naval warfare, which prohibited firing on merchant ships before they were properly warned.
