DIVORCE DRAMA.
INCIDENT IN THE LORDB. ARCHBISHOP AND JUDGE. BLUNT WORDS USED. (Times Air Mall Service.) LONDON, June 25. The Archbishop of Canterbury was dramatically confronted in the House of Lords last night by a famous Judge. Divoroe provided a scene such as Parliament has not witnessed for years, says the Parliamentary correspondent oj the Dally Herald. The Archbishop said he would not vote either for or against the Second Reading of Mr A. P. Herbert’s Marriage Bill, although he put In a saving clause that he might vote against the Third Reading. “12 Per Cent. Discount.’* Lord Atkin, a famous judge, was the man who confronted him. The Arohbishop was in favour of the clause that prevents a divorce within five years of marriage. Lord Atkin told him that this was "a terrible olause, a sort of 12$ per cent, discount offered to the opponents of the BUI.” Blunt Words. In Mnnt words he said the Archbishop had to make up his mind whether or not it was of advantage to the community that there should be divorce, and quoted some dreadful cases that had come within his : own court experience. Neither did the Arohbishop of York make up his mind. He though the Bill was desirable, but that it was inappropriate for the Bishops to vote for it. Dr. Hensley Henson. Bishop of Durham, challenged his clerical chief and wholeheartedly supported the- Bill. He though It would help to roll away the Inequities of the existing law and re-build a gr*at many broken homes.
