UNECONOMIC RUNNING.
BOBBY CALF COLLECTORS. OVERLAPPING IN MANAWATU. <By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday. The overlapping of lorries engaged in the collection of bobby calves was discussed in Palmerston North to-day. Mr P. U. Skoglund, No. 2 Licensing Authority, told representatives of operators and exporting firms that after he had heard their representations he would go to Auckland and consult with Mr E. J. Phelan, who was conducting a similar Inquiry in that province. In one case quoted a lorry covered 105 miles to pick up 24 calves, and in another case a lorry had gone 50 miles for one calf. It was pointed out competition among exporting firms resulted in an increase in costs, brought about by several lorries operating over one route. Drivers had to haggle with farmers at their gates as to the price to be paid. The conference agreed, more or less, with the opinion of the chairman, that the difficulty could be overcome by the producers themselves, under a guaranteed price scheme by the freezing works.
