NEW CARGO STEAMERS.
FOR INTER-COLONIAL TRADE. UNION COMPANY’S PLANS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Union Steam Ship Company announces that orders have been placed in the United Kingdom for two new cargo vessels in addition to the Kakapo, 'Kahika, Wanaka, Korowai and Kariiane, at present building for their fleet. The names chosen for the two new ships are Komata and Kurow, which will be sister ships in design and size. They will be built by Alexander Stephen and Sons, Lint house, Glasgow, to plans and specifications prepared at the Union Company’s headquarters at Wellington. The 'Komata and Kurow will he single-screw coal-burning steamers with a gross tonnage of about 3800 tons, giving a cargo deadweight of about 4500 tons on a loaded draught of 23ft. Gin. They will have a service speed of 12 knots. The cargo space will he divided Into three main compartments, two forward of tiie engine space and one aft. Each vessel will be equipped with one 20-ton and eight five-ton sets of cargo gear. Special consideration has been given to Ihe latest developments in hull design and general arrangement. Both ships are intended for the intercolonial cargo trade.
