MEN CEASE WORK.
STATE HOUSES AT ORAKEI. GRIEVANCES VENTILATED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. A stopwork meeting lasting half-an-hour was held by the carpenters, builders and general labourers engaged cn the erection of State houses at Orakel this morning. Union officials, representatives of the men and Mr W. J Lyon, M.P., addressed the meeting, while officials of the contracting firm, the Fietcher Construction Company, heard the men’s demands. These included a claim for two hours’ pay in the event of men reporting for work and being unable to continue through wet weather. This was later coupled with a request for 2d per hour all-round increase in pay. It Wwas pointed out that owing to pressure of work the claims before the Arbitration Court would probably not be finalised until early next year. The meeting decided to negotiate with Mr J. A. Leo, M.P., Under-Sec-retary for Housing, and to take up with the company a suggested ten minute morning “tea-o.”
