Third Round.—Petra and Mme. Mathleu beat Peters and Mrs. Peters. 6- 3. 12—10; Budge ami Miss Marble beat Butler and Miss Round, 6—2, 4—6. 6—l. French-New Zoaland Combination. A crowded No. 1 court saw the French-New Zealand combination, Brugnon and Stedman, provide a stern chase against the agile. South Africans, Farquharson and Kirby, whose superalwavs gave them a little to spare. South Africa took the first set at 6—4. and ran to 3—o In the second. Their opponents recovered and the score went to i 3 in South Africa’s favour. From Mien on all Stedman’s great retrieving work failed to atone for Brugnon s overhitlu.g and uncertainty in ban .ling services. The pair were outclassed in the third sot. The applause which greeted Crawford s periodical phases of brilliance showed how mger Ihe crown was to sec his best form. Crawford, in the third set against Sham, made atrocious mistakes for a player of his calibre. In the gallery’s opinion he lacked someone to extend him. Austin’s oall control was ton good for Lacroix, who was outplayed. The match lasted barely half an hour. Best Seen For Years. The Czechslovakian doubles combination. Hecht and Menzel, was the best seen at Wimbledon for years, the players volleying remarkably at the shortest range. Grant was responsible for some amazing recovery shots.
