STEAMER ON FIRE.
SAID TO BE SINKING RAPIDLY. ABANDONED BY THE CREW. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright NEW YORK, June 27. A British cargo steamer, the Sandgate Castle, is on fire in mid-Atlantic. The 40 members of the crew abandoned the ship and took to the lifeboats. The Dollar liner President Pierce, and another British cargo vessel, the BJairspey, sped to the rescue, having picked up an S.O.S. call. The fire broke out between decks while the' Sandgate Castle was en route from New York to the Cape Verde Isles. She carries no passengers. The President Pierce later picked up the crew of the Sandgate' Castle from the lifeboats. All are safe. The abandoned vessel is sinking rapidly. The Sandgate Castle, which was built in 1922 by Short Brothers, Sunderland, is owned by the Union Castle Mail Company. She' is of 7634 tons and is fitted for oil fuel.
