TRADING BANKS.

RETURNS FOR MAY. ADVANCES AND DEPOSITS. (Special to Times). WELLINGTON, Friday. The monthly statement of assets and liabilities of the six trading banks at the close of business on Monday, May 31, was gazetted to-night. A comparison of the principal items at the end of May in the past three years is shown in the following table:—

•Notes of the Reserve Bank held as till money by the banks on May 31 •were valued at £3,934,516. The complete Issue at the date of the return was £12,974,590, so that the sum of £9,040,074 represents the aotlve circulation, notes actually in the hands of the publlo. This Is an increase of nearly £320,000, compared with the figure at the end of the previous month. The total is, however, some £BOO,OOO smaller than that at the end of March, when the Easter holiday demand was still active. Deposit Movements. Free deposits, or current aooount balances, were nearly £2,000,000 lower than the total at the end of April. The May figure is, however, very substantially higher than that shown at the same date a year previously, the difference being Just over £5,000,000. Fixed deposits have changed little in level during the month the return covers. Advances and discounts total £48,033,164, or £548,000 more than the figure at the end of April. The increase over the level a year previously is more than £3,000,000. Tn consequence of tills rise, the excess of deposits over advances is more than £2,000.000 less than it. was at the end of May, 1936. The value of assets held in London on account of New Zealand business is £696.000 less than it was al the end of April. It is nearly £5.000,000 below the level at the end of May last ; Subsidiary coin in the banks at May I 81 was valued at £767.884, compared with £7 15.290 on April 26, The return also shows gold valued at £966 I held by the banks.
