INADEQUATE PENALTIES.
IMPOSED ON MOTORISTS. MR. SEMPLE DISSATISFIED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Transport, expressed himself strongly on the. inadequate penalties imposed by jtisiices on intoxicated motorists. He referred especially to a case in Blenheim in which a resident was fined £5 and his name suppressed. Accused had left his car in a garage, and the police removed the. ignition key. Obtaining another key he was proceeding to the police station to demand an explanation, when he was arrested. The Minister characterised the. smallness of Hie flue and the suppression of Ihe, name as discrimination and a miscarriage of Justice. Mr. Semple added that lie had issued a warning to the justices and it seemed that they took no notice of it. “ Let me repeat,” he added, “that 175 innocent. New Zealand persons have lost, their lives in the past seven years through drunken drivers. During the same period 2500 motorists were convicted in the Courts on charges of heins drunk iu charge of motor vehicles.”
