HERD TESTING.
IMPROVED FIGURES The herd-testing: figures indicate a substantial improvement over those of the previous season, which can be construed as an endorsement of the change made in the control of herdtesting at the end of last season, when the movement was placed under the control of the New Zealand Dairy Board, stated the report of the National Dairy Federation. The necessity of herd testing had been strongly advocated for many years and while it was admitted that other factors sometimes militate against the improvement which is expected from herd testing, this should not be regarded as failure on the part of the system itself. Testing discloses the position as it is, and it supplies the farmer with vital inproduction, and the success, or otherwise, of his breeding programme, which can be obtained in no other way. As good cows, and even better cows, are the objective of all dairy farmers, it is difficult to understand why less than 14 per cent, of the cows are under test. If herd testing were viewed in its right perspective there would be an urgent demand for its universal adoption.
