WHATAWHATA-NGARUAWAHIA ROAD.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The recent flood in the Waipa River which caused the banks to overflow and flooded the road in some places three feet deep cannot pass without comment. We all know the safety of the travelling public comes first, whether they be ratepayers or otherwise. At the entrance to the flooded area on the road it was common to see, during the day, half a dozen cars, the drivers hesitating whether to venture through or turn back. In some cases those who took the risk found themselves in a peculiar position and had to call out to neighbours in the vicinity to assist them. The position on the road has proved itself quite ancient and the Waipa Council should try to deviate this road for traffic all the year round, without causing inconvenience to the travelling public. Wo all know that economy and the short cut go hand in hand, but advanced theory, which the public have to suffer for, is never acceptable. We understand the Waipa Council intend sealing the. road from 1 locking's Corner on the Whatawhata Road lo Horottu, instead of coming right on to the Ngaruawahia boundary, along the Waipa River. If a tally were taken over these two routes in regard to traffic, the Wliatawhata-NgaruawahJa Road would have a ten to one majority, irrespective of the overflow from Raglan County. The ratepayers would hesitate to sanction -such a deviation in the southern end of the Waipa County when the .Ygaruawahia-Whata-wliata Road is more important.—l am etc., SYD. SAULBREY.
