RECORD DIVIDEND

SENSATIONAL PLACE PRICE SURPRISE AT CLAUDELANDS. HORSE NOT FANCIED. A record place dividend for the Dominion was returned In the opening race at Claudelands today, when Tangaroa In finishing third netted his supporters close on £IOO. Only £2 10s was invested on the horse’s chance to fill a place, while he carried only 309 on the win machine. Had the horse succeeded in winning, his price would have been a sensational one of nearly £4OO. On the place machine, one ticket of £1 and three of 10s were held by the public, neither owner nor trainer being interested in the horse for a place. In view of Tangaroa’s recent form it was rather surprising that he was not better supported. After winning two seconds at the first Wanganui meeting, he won his first race at Hawera on Easter Saturday after galloping off the mark. He is trained by the wellknown Epsom mentor, Mr C. G. Lee, and races in. the interests of Mr H. Morpeth, the well-known barrister and solicitor of Auckland, and once a prominent member of the Auckland Trotting Club committee.

The biggest win dividend returned in New Zealand was that of Wairoa Bell at the Nelson trots some years ago, when she returned* just over £IOOO. Unworthy paid just over £330 at the Hawera Trots on Easter Monday, while the greatest dividend in gallops was that of Karamu, who paid over £450 in a hurdle race on the old Avondale course, some years ago.
