CRITICISM ANSWERED.
NEW PLYMOUTH HOUSES. NO EVIDENCE OF NEGLECT. WELLINGTON, Friday. The statement made by Mr D. F. Saxton, president of the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, that towns represented by Opposition members had been overlooked in the State housing scheme, drew a reply today from Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., Undersecretary for Housing, who said the
criticism was entirely without foundation.
Mr Lee said, as evidence of the fact that New Plymouth had not been neglected, that a letter was sent oy him to its member, Mr S. G. Smith, on April 12, acquainting him of negotiations going on for the purchase of land In New Plymouth, and the fact that a certain transaction was approaching completion. Land had been acquired rapidly at Palmerston North because a Crown area .had been faken over. This was selected as the first centre for a provincial scheme because it was easier to operate from Wellington.
“To show how the spoils are com ing to the victors,” concluded Mr Lee
“1 instance Auckland, where every house so far contracted for is being erected in the electorate not of a Labour member, but of Mr W. P. Endean.’’
