WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI,

The May meeting of the NawtonRotokauri Institute was held in Nawton Hall on May 5, Mrs Cook Presiding. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song. On arrival of Mrs Robson the chair was taken by her. The president expressed appreciation at the presence of the vice-president of the Waikato federation. After reading the recommendations of the committee, all of which met with the approval of the meeting, the Winter Show court was discussed and it was decided to go on with the exhibition.

There was an exhibition of antique jewellery. Mrs Robson gave a very Interesting talk on pioneering days, speaking of an expedition to Sunday Island in 1888, at the conclusion of which she was heartily thanked. Mrs Wales was thanked for her report of the Federation meeting. The month’s roll call was ” My favourite book and author.” As it is Coronation month the motto was “ Fear God, Honour the King.” The competition, an article of plain sewing, was won by Mrs Hewitt, a very well-made man’s shirt being the article chosen by the judges. The winner of the competition, the best pot of jam, was won by Mrs Dent. The meeting was a very pleasant one and closed with the National Anthem. AT WAHAROA. Mrs J. Williams presided over the May meeting of the Waharoa Institute, the motto being: “When you’re up to the neck in hot water think of the kettle and sing.” Letters were received from Mrs McLean and Miss J. Dunlop on their departure for a trip to the Homeland, wishing the Institute a successful year; also one from Walton congratulating the Institute on winning the shield at the Matamata Show.

After a short discussion it was decided to abandon the “ husbands ” evening this year. A very interesting letter was read from the link in Beaminster, Dorset, England, and a bundle of English “ Home and Country ” was handed round to members. It was decided to donate £1 to the King George V. Memorial Fund. Mrs Ryan gave a very interesting demonstration of Barboia work and Miss Williams gave two songs.

The roll call was “ Knock, knock ” or “ What's your bus .ioss,” some original and very amusing answers being given. A novel and interesting competition which had been sent from Beamlnster was much enjoyed. The first prize for tlie best bowl of chrysanthemums was won by Mrs C. Barker, with Mrs Wathen second; a competition for three onions by Mrs C. White 1. Mrs C. Barker 2. Mrs C. Stanford 3. and for melon Jam. Mrs C. Barker 1, Mrs D. Gunn 2, Mrs C. Stanford 3. “The best flower in my garden ” was won by Mrs Gunn, with a rose. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Stanford. Dick. McIlardie, G. Whyte and Williams.

AT MELVILLE. The Melville Institute held its monthly meeting: on Wednesady at Mi's Willey’s residence in Ohaupo Hoad. There was a good attendance, all members bringing their promised articles for the court in the forthcoming show. One new member was proposed. The roll call which was well responded ! to was “ Gardening hints." During the ! afternoon Mrs Buckland gave a brief I resume of the recent conference, at 1

which she was a delegate, and spoke also on the recent drama festival at which Melville Drama Circle entered a play. Members decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mrs Zelda Fahey for her untiring help in coaching the players. Owing to the show committee being busy with court exhibits, there was no demonstration, but two social competitions were held, the winners being Mesdames C. Brown and Speachley. The results of the Institute competitions were:—Best vase of violets, Mrs G. Brown 1, Mrs W. Willey 2; best plate of puff pastry, Mrs Priest 1, Mrs Duff 2.

The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Henry, Gutry and Ilammerton. Mrs Prisk did good business at the trading table.
