Superintendent Brophy, chief of the criminal investigation branch of the police force, after examination by the Government Medical Board, has been declared medically unfit to return to duty. Superintendent Brophy has been ill for many months, and the medical advioe was that he was unlikely to recover unless he could rest. The Attorney-General recently entered a nolle' prosequi in the case against Geoffrey Davies. In connection with the park shooting case on May 22 of last year, Superintendent J. O’C. Brophy, in the' Melbourne City Court, on March 18, identified Geoffrey Davies, aged 32, as the man who shot him. Davies, who was charged with having wounde’d Superintendent Brophy with intent to murder, was committed for trial.

Superintendent Brophy, head of the' Criminal Investigation Branch of the Victorian Police, was wounded when he went in a motor-car to Royal Park, near the city. A Royal Commission was held to inquire into the case and as a sequel the Commissioner of Police, Sir Thomas Blarney, resigned. Chief Inspector Alexander Duncan, of Scotland Yard, was appointed to report on proposals for the reorganisation of the Police Department in Victoria and last January he succeeded Sir Thomas as commissioner.
