MR TIMOTHY HURLEY. TARANAKI PIONEER. (Special to Times.) HAWERA. Monday. The death has occurred at New Plymouth of Mr Timothy Hurley (86). Born at Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland. Mr Hurley came to New Zealand in 1874 iji the sailing ship Lehogue, landing at Wellington. Later he moved to the Wairarapa and then to the Patea district. With his three brothers he founded the district known as Hurleyville, which at that time was covered in heavy standing bush. After a great deal of hard work the land was cleared and in time the district established one of the first dairy factories in New Zealand. In 1898 Mr Hurley purchased some land at Kaupokonui, on the Waimate Plains, and here he farmed for about eight years, when he sold out and i went to Hawera where he lived 1916. Later he retired and with his family went to live at New Plymouth. During the early days Mr Hurley was a well-known competitor in sporting activities, one of the first Maori race meetings being held on his farm at Kaupokonui. He also took a keen interest in public affairs, and for a number of years was a member of the Waimate Road Board, and a director of the Kaupokonui and Hurleyville Dairy Companies. Mr Hurley leaves six sons and four daughters, Messrs. D. R. (Okalwa), George (Patea), T. J. (Te Roti), Thomas (Wanganui), A. H. (Wanganui), and E. F. Hurley (Wellington) and Mesdames A. J. Hopcroft (Norrr.anby), W. H. Chadwick (Hawera), J. W. Connell (Hamilton), and J. P. Murphy (New Plymouth). He has a sister, Mrs M. Lynch (Paraparaumu) and a brother, Mr Hurley (Hurleyville). There are 26 grandchildren. Mr Daniel Hurley is 88 years of age and lie is still living in his house of pioneering days.

IVIR HENRY CHARLES JEFFERIES. A FEILDING PIONEER. The death has occurred of Mr Henry Charles Jefferies, a pioneer of the Feilding district. The late Mr Jefferies was born in Gloucestershire (England) G 9 years ago and came to New Zealand in 1875 with his parents in the sailing ship. Helen Denny, landing at Port Ahuriri. About two weeks later the vessel took them to Foxton and from there the family proceeded to Palmerston North. Eater they k went b> Feilding by bullock dray. Deceased stayed at Feilding for nearly two years, after which he moved to Bunnythorpe. He then bought a farm at Apiti. which he later sold, > and prior to his marriage in 1891 he was farming at Colyton. After farming at Colyton for eleven years. Mr Jefferies sold his property and purchased another farm at Levin where the family resided for several years before returning to Taonui, where they lived until six years ago. After farming at. Kelvin •Grove for some time Mr and Mrs Jefferies retired and went to live at Feilding. The late Mr Jefferies is survived by three daughters and three sons. Mr Gabriel Jefferies, of Hamilton, is % brother. MR H. B. TUCKER. WORLD S RECORD CLAIMED. PALMERSTON N.. Tuesday. The death lias occurred of Mr Henry Bradbridge Tucker (79), the owner and licensee for 37 years ot Tucker’s Club Hotel.
