CALF CLUBS.
COMPETITIONS APPROACH. PREPARATIONS FOR SHOW. Now that the cl-ub competitions and the Waikato Summer Show are approaching it is necessary for members of calf clubs to make a start with the preparation of their calves. The •calves should be brushed daily and a cover should be made, thus putting the skin in a nice healthy condition. A cover can be made very easily from a manure bag. Cut the bag down the seam and then place it over the calf to fit it. It may be necessary to cut a strip off each side and perhaps a piece of the front end. This should be cut at an angle sloping forward and downward so that the cover can be brought round under the neck. I*t is advisable to make the cove*r slightly on the big side so that the call’ will not grow out of it too soon. A piece of rope attached to each corner in front and another piece to go round behind the calf is quite' good enough, but any boy who is handy with tools can make an improved cover by rivetting on straps and buckles. Let the calf wear the cover each night for about, a week then turn the cover over or Inside out when it will be found that the natural oils from the hide will have made the sacking practically water-proof. The Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Socie'ty has made a special effort to cater for calf clubs this year and a very keen competition is anticipated. Every club should make an effort to enter as many calves as possible in the special classe's and make the show a real calf club day.
