DEMOCRATS’ ORGANISER. BALANCE OF SALARY CLAIMED. SOME WELL-KNOWN DEFENDANTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. A scquol to the general election was heard in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when several wellknown personalities In what was the Democrat Party were sued by Harry Charles Baulf, political organiser, who -claimed to recover the balance of salary and expenses alleged owing for his work as Auckland organiser for the party. Mi’ Wyvern Wilson, S.M., was on the Bench Mr J. F. W. Dickson appeared for plaintiff, Mr A. K. North for William Goodfellow, who was in court, Mr 11. J. Butler for A. E. Davy, who was not present, Mr A. St. Clair Brown for Mr J. B. Donald, who was present, and Mr B. Elliot for Mr T. A. u. Hislop. The last-named was not present but ltis evidence, taken in Wellington, was commented on bv Mr Dickson.
Plaintiff claimed that defendants were officers of an incorpora led body known as the New Zealand Democrat Political Organisation of which the defendant, J. B. Donald, was chairman, and Spencer Clark, also a defendant, was secretary. Defendants Goodfellow, Davy and Hislop were officers or on the executive. Baulf claimed that in October 1934 he was employed by Davy at a salary of £7 weekly with expenses and he claimed recovery of £195 as the balance owing. Financing of Party. Mr Dickson said Baulf was engaged |in 1934 by Davy who said Goodfellow would be finding £25,000—£5000 himself and two others £SOOO each. He was arranging the balance. Goodfellow subsequently confirmed this, saying he would finance the Auckland executive for at lcasjt six months. Mr Dickson, proceeding, said Goodfellow continued payments for some months until he fell out with Davy and resigned. “The position of Hislop is an extraordinary one.” said Mr Dickson, in commenting on Hislop’s evidence taken In Wellington. “Hislop said he would devote his life talents to the
services of his country and the cause of the Decnoorat Party. He. in fact, received £3250 of which, lie alleges, he was to receive £IOOO for himself and three payments of £IOO per month.” This was apparently done, said Mr Dickson, to placate his partners for the time spent for the Democrat Party. Hislop admitted having received only two monthly payments of £IOO per month. “He Admits Nothing.” Mr Elliot: He admits nothing. Mr Dickson contended that as a member of tfie party. Hislop was partly liable fol’ this debt. Mr Elliot said the statements made by Mr Dickson were incorrect. Mr Dickson said as far as Goodfellow was concerned he and Davy entered into an agreement in 193 i whereby Davy was to receive £1250 i» year for three years and the committee was lo be Davy, Goodfellow and two nominees of Good Tel low.
