DEARER POTATOES.
STRONG DEMAND EVIDENT. INFLUENCING FACTORS. A rise in the price of potatoes is not unexpected at this season of the year, but other factors have Influenced-sales, and now a rapid Arming of prices lias resulted in Auckland and Hamilton. Ruling rates in the city are, for reds up to £lO ss, and whites up to £9 15s. In Hamilton the ruling price is £lO for both varieties. A strong demand has allowed producers to fix their prices at a higli level, which in view of limited supplies coming forward, has been maintained. Supplies from the south have been curtailed as the result of an iuterruplion in the steamer service and, although a small shipment is expected on Friday, there will be none further until September 26. Influencing factors on the potato market to-day are that heavy quantities are going to South America, and that frosts and bad weather have retarded the PukeLohe crops, which are not expected to be available until October or November. With a strong demand for southern potatoes over tiie next two months, it is anticipated that a steady rise in price will take place. Last year in September an acute shortage was experienced when up to £l9 per ton was realised.
