A violent. wind storm with a velocity of between 30 and GU miles swept Melbourne to—ilny, resulting in much damage. ;\ boy aged 10 amd a woman used 26 were killed at. Belgrave llill, a resort near the city, by a falling tree. Pluto glass windows in several city stores were blown in. A boy, a Imm and a horse and cart were blown through a shop window at. Port Melbourne. ’l'rees were blown down across the St. Ktlda road and much damage was done to fences in the suburbs. Two boats are missing from Port Phillip Bay. Yachts also were driven ashore and wrecked The storm arose suddenly and blew with unabated violence all day. Many reports of damage to crops are now coming in from country areas. MELBOURNE, Sept. l-l. Two people were killed and many injured in one of the worst storms that Melbourne has experienced for years. The sale smashed the new breakwater und sank lishing boats at Port Arlington, tore roots from houses in the city and suburbs, uprooted trees, and disconnected electrical services. At Essenden a little boy aged. 2; years was walking at: his mother's side when a gust tore the child from his mother‘s grasp and blew him fifty yards across a paddock. Many persons were rescued from perilous positions in Port Phillip Day. Four men were eight hours in a rowing boat, which was finally driven against Frunkton Pier. 'l‘he Queensnlift‘e lifeboat crew of nine men were out for six hours trying to rescue two men in a disabled launch which had gone to the’ assistance of the four men in the rowing boat reported above. Eventually late last night the launch was blown ashore at Mornington. The lifeboat headed back £Ol Queenscliff. where it. had not arrived at a late hour, but. no anxiety is felt.
