DEFENCE.
(To the Editor.) Sim—l wish to express my dis—agreement. \\~ith the opening generali—sation made in your leader on defence in to—day‘s issue, though at the same time I gladly acknowledge the spirit of reason and tolerance which almost invariable characterise your leading articles. In support of an extension of this country‘s preparations for war, you say: “The first duty of this or an}~ other Government is to ensure that the State shall continue to exist as a State. All the humanitarian legislation ever designed may be of little value unless that first conditlon can be assured. . . ." The intention is perfectly obvious to any and every reader that this in—vlolahllity should be maintained, even at the price of the organised destruc—jtion 01‘ our fellowmen, for which evil ‘purpose active preparation and nation—wide planning should be promptly l accelerated. ‘ I need hardly mention that 1 dis—agree \\'illi this un—tjhrlstiuu Littltuto, having muny times expressed, through the courtesy of your columns, my un—compromising opposition to \\'nri'nre. l merely wish to observe that l mnnul ‘see any sense in trying to sul‘ri-ruorll iour hmnunituriun endeavours by reisort to the most inhmnunilurioo tu'tiult lit, is possible to imagine.
