The question whether a refund should be made to a ratepayer who paid £i more in rates than lie ought to hnvo done owing lo a mistake by the Valuation Department was warmly debated by the city Council. The Valuation Department had admitted Ihe mistake and Hie city solicitor considered that, tlie Department should pay the money. lie said the Department made hundreds of mistakes of a similar sort and then told people to get the money back front the City Council. “There might a multiplicity Of refunds which would amount to a large sum.” said Mr R. A. Wright. >i.P. lie contended that it was monstrous that the council should take money which the ratepayer really did not owe and then refuse to refund it. The Mayor. Mr T. C. Hlslop. stated that the position would be investigated. The question could be brought up again.
