TELEPHONE CALLS.

Six channels for telephoning operate across Cook Strait, and. keeping careful check of the traffic over this thoroughfare between the North and South Island, Post Office officials know that the business rise's and falls in three very distinct pulsations during the working day. It, has been found that between 9 a.m. and noon 21 per cent of the total traffic ot' the day is handled. There is a distinct lull until 2 p.m. For the. next three hours another 21 per cent of the. full day’s work is done. The I bird busy period, stimulated by the half-rate concession from 0 p.m., commences at. that hour and lasts until 10 p.m. involving 29 per cent of the day’s traffic. Thus, in three welldeilned periods, the telephone channels across Cook Strait carry 71 per cent, of the total day’s business. Following its general practice' of analysing results from its equipment, the 'Department checks toll Iraffio closely and compares actual returns with the possibilities of Hie circuits provided l'or the business. It is found in practice that the' time occupied in what is termed “building up” calls averages at least 15 minutes 1 out of Ihe hour, leaving 45 minutes which can be charged to customers if a full hour’s business is offering.
