CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION. THIS MORNING’S RESULTS. <By TeJpgrnpn—Pre«s Association.) 'CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The New Zealand basketball championships were opened to-day in fine weather. Seven teams are competing in the senior and 10 in the junior championships. The following are the results so far:— Second Grade.—Otago Minor 20, v. West Coast, 13; Taranaki 17, v. Wellington West, 15; Hutt Valley 15, v. Wanganui, 10; Ashburton 25, v. Marlborough 15; South Canterbury 21, v. Bush, 15. Senior.—Canterbury 15, v. Hawke’s Bay, 14; Wellington 34, v. Waikato, 11; Southland 11, v. Auckland, 11. The annual conference selected Auckland for next year’s championships.
INTER-HOUSE COMPETITIONS END FINAL OF KNOCK-OUT ROUNDS. The enthusiasm and vigour that has characterised the inter-house basketball competitions at the Y.M.G.A. during the season had not diminished in any way last evening when the final of the knock-out competition was reached. This concluded the league’s contests for the year. Rivalry was still keen between the teams and fast, closely-contested matches sustained the interest of the spectators, the excitement running higher as the games progressed. The winners in the various sections were:—Men’s, Dalgety; Women's A, Law; Women’s B, Herd Testing. The presentation of trophies will take place at a function to be held in the Y.M.C.A. next month. The results of the matches are:— Men: Street and Street (handicap 5) 14, House and Daking (handicap a) 12; Y.M.C.A. A won by default from Marist; Dalgety (scr.) 8, Athletic (scr.) G. Second Round. Y.M.C.A. A (scr.) 12, Street and Street 11; Dalgety IG, Canoe Club (6) 8; Rowing Club (Scr.) 16, Athletic 13 (G) 10; Y'.M.C.A. B (G) 20, ’Bargain Store (7) 11. First” Semi-final: Dalgety 15, Y’.M.C.A. G. Second Semi-final: Y'.M.C.A. B 16 Rowing Club G. Final: Dalgety 11, Y.M.C.A. 10. Ladies A:—Y.M.C.A.
