FEARS OF EMPLOYERS.

PROPOSED LEGISLATION. “CHAOS IN INDUSTRY.” (By Telegrapti.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. The Canterbury Employers‘ Association has nnnle representations to the Government on its announced intention to introduce legislation next week to restore the 1931 wages rates anal other award Conditions. The association considers that there will he a most unfortunate disturbance of existing (twat-Ll conditions and argues that legislation already existing provides the workers with ample facil—ities for obtaining the wage rates anti improvement in conditions, and that the proposed legislation on top of the amendments to the Factories and Shops and Offices Acts, the 40-hour week and the basic wage, will place industry in a condition of chaos and thus Jeopardise the employment- of hundreds of workers. and the very existence of businesses themselves.

The association contends that the 1931 wages were sustained by the 1931 price levels for exported produce, but that the present price levels will not support the 1931 wages. The association has protested against increases in wages being made by Act of Parliament and also against making such legislation retrospective. The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, has replied that he will place the representations before the Government.
