A DIFFICULT CASE

TEN SEPARATE CHARGES. FORM OF KLEPTOMANIA. THREE YEARS' IIAnD LABOUR. (By Teiegraph.—Press .\ssoriatlon.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A suggestion that the prisoner sut—fcred from a form of kieplomania was made by His Honour. Mr Justice North—oroft. when sentencing Harry Thomas Belts \3B, for housebreaking and theft (four charges) house breaking with intent to commit theft (tour charges) and attempted house ‘breakIns with intent to commit theft (two charges). Betts was sentenced to three years‘ hard labour. "Yours is a very dimcult case." said‘ the Judge to Betts. "You are before me for sentence on ten separate charges. and have admitted breaking into 2: different houses. You have a long list. You have had reformative detention for three years and recently i 5 months‘ hard labour. You had only been released when you set out to commit this series of‘burglaries. They Ire not 0! a dangerous character but rather an aggravated form or sneak thlevlns. It. seems to be a form of kleptomania, 'but as society is ordered at present there is no adequate treat—ment for this condition. You cannot harry the community in this way; you will be sentenced to three years" hard labour."
