UNDER SOCIAL OREDIT.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—“Lucre” asks concerning the insurance companies under Social Credit. It Is unlikely that existing institutions will be interfered with unless and until such interference is proved to be necessary. The fire and accident policies could not very well be done without, but it is conceivable that in the future we shall see a gradual diminution of life policies. Under a system that gives economic security to all we will begin to realise that there is no longer any need to “save for a rainy day.” The fear for tiie future that compels people to deny themselves comforts and enjoyment in order that they may not suffer want in the evening of their lives, will be banished by, generous pensions, which they will accept, not as charity, but as a just reward for past service. In the same way their death will not result in poverty for their dependents. It is not anticipated that the changeover from the present to the future system will he accomplished with any suddenness. The monetary legislation will be the foundation of the new civilisation. Other reforms will follow as and when necessity arises. The process of adjustment must be continual if we are to progress. Major Douglas has said: “It is conceivable—since the future is unknown —that mankind will still be unhappy after the fear of want has been removed, but we cannot expect mankind to accept that on hearsay.” Having arrived at a position where we are able to make the great experiment we have no alternative but to make it. If we can abolish poverty and the fear of poverty we remove a cause of human unhappiness so enormous that we have no right, from timid fear of consequences, to refuse to take this tremendous step. The change, of course, will not come of its own accord. It must be preceded by the greatest struggle in history between the forces of progress and the forces of reaction —the struggle Is only beginning.—l am, etc., G. HUNTER. Horsham Downs, February 21.
