NEWS OF THE CINEMA.

Australian Girl’s £IOO a Week. Mary Maguire, daughter of Mr and Mrs M. Maguire, of Brisbane, is playing in the lead opposite Charles Farrell in the Australian film, “ The Flying Doctor,” at a salary of £IOO a week. On my recent holiday trip to Sydney I travelled on the Monterey wilh Mr Farrell, and Miss Maguire joined the boat just inside the heads. On arrival at the wharf the film star conducted his leading lady through the surging crowd. Miss Maguire, who is petite and very pretty, must have been the envy of all the girls on the wharf as her tall and handsome escort guarded her in their slow progress through the mob. New Zealand Actress In Hollywood. Within a month May Beatty, the New Zealand actress, was in three pictures, two of them being " Little Lord Fauntlcroy ” and “ The Man With the Black Hat,” the latter with Warren William. May, incidentally, remembers Charles Chaplin long before lie was a star. Those were the days when she was married to Edward Lauri, and he was much higher than Chaplin on the theatrical ladder. Film Star on the Mariposa. Polly Moran, the stage and screen star, sailed from Los Angeles for Sydney by the Mariposa, which passed through Auckland yesterday. Miss Moran is under engagement to Hie Tivoli circuit and will make her first appearance in Melbourne. Italians Fighting Utopia! H. G. Wells, on his arrival in Hollywood recently, had to suffer the usual bombardment of questions at a press reception. The scribes questioned him on every problem that has hit tlie world since Adam and Eve started housekeeping in Eden. As the questions were dying down after an hour or two, up spoke a certain film producer , not exactly renowned for his pronunciation, and demanded to know : "Mr Wells, why are the Italians fighting Utopia?”
