In supporting the Franco-Soviet pact, in the Chamber, M. Henriot, replying to criticism that the Red Army was too weak to be of real help to France, said Russia had 1,300,000 men under arms, serving two to live years, | and another 3 t ,500,00 trained reservists. He quoted General Loisean.' Assistant Chief of the French General Staff, as stating that the Russian Army was one of the most powerful in Europe. He said that the French textile metallurgical industries favoured a loan of 1,000,000,000 francs to the Soviet because it would bring new business and enable the re-employment of 30,000 workers. The pact fully harmonised with the League and the Locarno Treaty. The Russian attitude had been irreproachable since ‘she entered the League.
