THE WAIKATO FIXTURE

TRIALS AT TE RAPA. THE FINAL OALLOPB. SEVERAL USEFUL EFFORTS. (By “Martian.”) Although cutting out somewhat as the result of recent heavy l-ain the going on the course proper, 53 feet out from the rails, was in comparalively good order for the» final gallops of horses engaged at the Waikato meeting on Saturday and Monday. Several pleasing efforts were recorded among those to shape well being Kilberis, Prince Colossus, Lornacre, Sirona, Prince Acre, Valrent, Boughal, and Anagram. Providing no further rain is experienced the track should be in good order for the meeting. Julian’s Trio. A. J. Julian’s trio, Star Artist (Goulsbro), Light Comedy (Bowden) and Whirling (Cotter) were practically on terms at the completion of six furlongs in 1.23, the first three in 40s. Light Comedy and Whirling both shaped well and are in good order for engagements ahead. Prlnoe Acre. Prince Acre (Winder) was responsible for a sound effort over seven furlongs in company with Valrent (Bentley), whom he was shading at the end in 1.36. Prince Acre is to start on the second day of the meeting. An Easy Five. Jan Kidd (Cotter) and Stormy Weather (Goulsbro) hit out easily over five furlongs in 112. Both cuuid have improved on the time. A Good Effort. Lornacre (Winder) and Sirona (Campbell) impressed over six furlongs, cutting out the distance in 1.224, time which was bettered only once during the morning- Lornacre is engaged in the Linley Hack on Saturday and possessed good prospects. He has been working consistently well of late. Sirona is looking well. Gay Defence. Gay Defence (McKenzie) shaped well In accounting comfortably for Little Saint (Campbell) and Merial (Winder) over live furlongs in 1.94. Gay Defence’s saddel slipped near the three furlong post and McKenzie had difficulty in retaining his seat. Under the circumstances Gay Defence’s showing was a highly creditable one. Teak Not Galloped. Teak was sent along on the No. 1 grass but after hitting out over the first furlong did not go on with it. Over a Round. Curlew (Fergusson) was a couple of lengths in front of Modern Maid (Wells) and Folly’s Choice (Smith) over a round encompassed In 2.15. Curlew is engaged in the Frankton Hurdles on Saturday and Interest will attach to his showing. Dust Up. Dust Up (Gladding) came home from the three furlong peg in 41s. Leo Colossus—Con Fuoco. There was little between Leo Colossus (M-oInally) and Con Fuoco (Vaughan) at the completion of hali'-a-mile in 5445. This was the best effort prior to the breakfast interval. Valorous. Valorous (Gilmer) hit out freely over seven furlongs being timed lo run the last five in 1.17. A Smart Six. The best trial over six furlongs was that of Kilberis (Gladding) who finished four lengths in front of La Femme Noire (Gilmer) at the completion of the effort in 1.22 1-5. Kilberis. has been working consistently well since coming here and should perform well at* the meeting. He will lack nothing on the score of condi? tion. I

Boughal. After travelling slowly over the first part Boughal (Day) came home from Hie half-mile peg In 545. The big fellow is looking as well as ever but was withdrawn from his sprint engagement this morning. Le Chasseur. Le Chasseur (Vaughan) finished in front ol' Chaytor (Houghton) at the end of hall'-a-mile in the satisfactory time of 53As. This maiden will bo having his first outing in public on Saturday and it will be interesting to see how lie shapes in the Trial Stakes. Anagram. Anagram (Day) clocked 1.9 for five furlongs. This was a good effort on the part of Reilly’s charge as he has not had a great deal of fast work and on this morning’s showing lie should not be without prospects in the Trial Stakes on Saturday. Sinking Fund—Diacquedoon. Sinking Fund (Gilmer) jumped off at the six furlong peg being joined by Diacquedoon (Mclnally) at the five. Sinking Fund was limed lo run the lull distance in 1.23 1-3. the last five furlongs being run in 1.9 4-5. It was a useful effort on Hie part of both horses. Up the Straight. Pliileinup iMcKenzie) was galloped Up (lie straight and is bearing an improved appearance as Hie result of Ihe work lie lias had over the past several weeks. Mangukaha. Mangukaln Day) outpointed Gay chief Yaughajl) o\er five furlongs in 1.9 1-5. Mangukalu has done everything required of her since the Rotorua meeting and it will not be on (he score of condition if she fails to show up in her engagement in the Linley Hack.

Calshot —Lllbert. Calshot (Gilmer) was in front of Lilbert (McKenzie) at the completion of five furlongs in I■i 0. Over Half. From a flying start Calcutta (McKenzie), Full'of Scotch (Vaughan) and King Theo (Mclnally) recorded 35 is for a half-mile effort. Gappy Finishes On. Cappy (Day) was several lengths in front of Polly Douglas. (Goulsbro), Worthy King (A. Gilmer) and Racefield (H. Gilmer) at the completion of five furlongs run in 1.10 1.-5. Cappy has been hitting out well in his tasks and appears to be on the improve.

Visitors Arrive. R. Barlow (New Plymouth) has arrived with Refresher, Dombey, Clessamor, Royal Artfst and Tahurangi; H. Dulieu (New Plymouth) with Grateful and Red Sand and W. M. Taylor (Ellersiie) with Gay Defence. Race Whip Sohooled. Race Whip (Rennie) was schooled over four hurdles and acquitted himself well. Riding Engagements. WITHDRAWAL FROM SPRINT. Boughal was scratched for the sprint, the President’s Handicap, at 0.1 U this morning. TE AROHA TRIALS. GAY ROSE-KING BRIERLY. CONDITION OF KEITH LU. (By Telegrapli.—Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Thursday. The going was holding this morning when horses for the Waikato meeting were galloped. Bonnie Song, displaying considerably more dash than usual, was associated over five furlongs with Heatherland. The first-named led until nearing the post when Heatherland moved up and they finished together in 1.6. Waitaka and Armacourt executed useful work. Royal Secret, looking well, slipped over six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. The best gallop of the morning was that between Gay Rose (Maguire)’ and King Briefly (Carmont) over a mile. The latter broke away fast and led for four furlongs where the mare joined issue and moving ,away gradually scored by a length in 1.48. Mungacre and Lagoon, who are both in excellent condition, were on terms at the end of six furlongs in 1.20 and Libra, with nine stone up, ran four furlongs in 535. Keith Lu. Keith Lu, who has apparently recovered frosa several days’ indisposition during'which it was feared he might not he a starter in the Storey Memorial Handicap, went one circuit at slow pace and another at threequarter pace, finishing with a fast dash and pulling up’well. Gay Egypt held a slight advantage over three furlongs along the back of the course In 39sEkanui, an improved horse, beat the King Lu mare decisively over five furlongs in 1.5 and Hesketoon ran four in 53 3-ss. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. SUSPENSION OF JOCKEY. CHANGES IN ENGAGEMENTS. SYDNEY, February 19. The suspension of M. McCarten has caused changes in riding engagements in Melbourne. J. Pratt will ride Gold Rod in all engagements, and possibly Cuddle in the Australian Gup. D. Munro is likely to ride Cuddle in the Futurity Stakes. AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY. TO RIDE IN ENGLAND. PARIS, February 18. After leaving India on March 24 the Australian jockey Sid Britt will not ride in France during the coming season, except possibly on Sundays. lie proposes to settle in England and ride for Mr Frank Bullock, his father-in-law.
