WAIKATO TOURNAMENT. SEMI-FINAL STAGES REACHED. 1 J. ROACH IN GOOD FORM. Tennis which reached a high standard was witnessed in the Waikato Lawn Tennis Association's championship and handicap tournament, which was continued on the Rosstrevor Street grass courts yesterday. Following a good start on the opening day, practically all the competitions were advanced to a forward stage yesterday, in several cases the semi-finals being reached, while the final of the boys’ championship doubles was decided. A feature of the day’s play was the sound form displayed by J. Roach, of Hamilton, who wfent through the men’s championship singles to beat the well-known Aucklander, J. Mayson, in the semi-final, after a match which went to three sets. .Roach will meet a worthy opponent in the final in A. D. Brown, noted Aucklander, and their match should be one of the best of the tournament. Brown accounted for D. Livingstone in the other semifinal. Another notable victory in which Roach figured was recorded in the championship combined doubles, when, partnered by Miss P- Sorby, of Hamilton, he defeated A. D. Brown and Miss Margaret Beverley, the latter being the New Zealand junior title holder.
In the ladies’ championship doubles Mrs A. H. Ward (formerly Miss Jean Mueller) and Miss P. Sorby, qualified to contest the final by defeating the Cambridge pair, Mrs V. Hollis and Miss R. Drake. An interesting match was provided in the final of the boys’ championship doubles. Sampson and Cunningham, who 'had played consistently throughout, getting the decision from May and Haddock. The handicap events also reached a forward stage yesterday. The finals In all events were to have been played to-day, but the continued rain prevented play. Weather permitting, the finals will be decided next Saturday, commencing at 10 a.m. Results of yesterday’s matches were as follows: CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. Men’s 'Singles. Semi-flnals.—Brown beat D.
