SYDNEY, Jan. 31, The hearing /-as resumed to-day at the Central Police Court, Sydney, of the case in which a former detective, John Ellis Findlay ;4U) was charged with having conspired to pervert the course of justice by aiding a prisoner, William Campbell, to abscond from bail and escape to New Zealand. Accused was further charged, together with Ernest Pierce Coombe (40), agent, and Charles Richard Tanser (.52), agent, with with William Campbell and William Holland Makin and others to defraud several persons of largo sums of money. There was a similar charge against William Campbell ,35), clerk. Continuing his evidence Campbell said he had suggested to Findlay selling the formula of nitrolyte. alleged to have been possessed by the Chargol syndicate, for a lump sum. He assured Findlay he could sell it in New Zealand If he were allowed to go there. Money at that time was not coming in fast enough and the great things which were expected had not materialised. Campbell said that Findlay was making incessant demands and had a voracious appetite for money. He saw Findlay on the day before the former left for New Zealand, when he told Findlay that he and Makin had booked their passages under the names of Gamble and Dakin. Un that occasion he handed Findlay £5. Campbell also said he gave Findlay £6 on board tlie stop before her departure. Continuing. Campbell said he was arrested in New Zealand in February, 1935. Findlay arrived a fortnight later and said he would withhold the issue of the original warrant, adding; *\How is the purse?” Campbell said he replied: •* I ha\e nearly completed the sate of the new rights for £SOOO and »!:e Australian rights for £20.000.’ Campbell said he paid £95 to Findlay in New Zealand. mr ,!
