TJio competition was to all appearances within tlie domain of housewives, only it was conducted willi tiie aim of ascertaining the nature and weight of food consumed by an average, New Zealand family in one week. The best returns were made by an engineer in Wellington and a constable in a country district in Canterbury. A total of 140 entries was received and seven women divided the third prize, which was augmented by the department. Rheumatic conditions and influenza are stated to be the ailments which cost Friendly Societies most money, while the most expensive ages are between 20 and 2a.
