BOROUGH COUNCIL POLICY.
(To Ihe Editor.) Sir,—As a long-suffering ratepayer 1 consider it high time that somebody protested vigorously against the policy of the Hamilton Borough Council of spending large sums of the ratepayers’ money on non-essenlial works, while many streets which arc thickly populated arc crying aloud for attention. For instance, residents of Myrtle Street, Claudetan'ds, have lo tolerate muddy footpaths in wet weather and clouds of dust, from Ihe road in <j|ry weather, and lids street has frontages on both sides for Ihe full length (about. -iO houses). T|, is used by l raffle as a through road from River Hoad to To. Aroha Street. While this and oilier streets have been neglected for years the council has busied itself in kerbing and channelling a high bank with no frontages opposite Memorial Park. Recently, 100, heaps of tar and sand have been found for widening the bitumen of Collingwood, Hincmoa, Anglesea and other streets. All good work, no doubt, Iml these streets had wide bitumen, korbing amt channelling and asphalt footpaths in tiic first place, whereas Myrtle and other streets have nothing (except‘dust, and mud). A careful survey shows that Ihe council Hits year has "placed first things last.” It is all very well to spend money on constructing line scenic walks round the Lake and improving the entrances to the town, etc., but W'haL about providing good footpaths and korbing for streets in Hie centre of the town, streets which are thickly populated and w hose houses yield a "rich harvest in rates? Hoping some councillor will take this mailer up.—l am etc FIRST THINGS FIRST." Hamilton, December JHi„
