AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HAMILTON CLUB. MEETING ON WEDNESDAY. NOTES AND 'COMMENTS.

(By “Nurmi.”)

The weekly meeting held on Wednesday last was a pronounced success. Weather conditions were Ideal and the events were keenly contested. J. Denz provided the tit-bit of the evening In capturing a double, while Miss 'Campbell gave a brilliant exhibition to win the ladles’ sprint from the scratch marie. The 120 yards junior drew a field of nine. They rose to a good start and at halfway the backmarker, WGoosman was making up leeway In great style. However, he couldn’t quite get up and J. Murray (7yds), won by Inches from Reg Buckingham (lOJyds), with Goosman in third place. Ten toed the marks in the senior 120yds and another perfect start was was effected. At half-way, Bogun, Armstrong and Bloore were the leaders, but a terrific finish by the back man changed things completely. Denz, off 2yds, was the winner, as predicted in these notes last week. Joyes went a great race off scratch to be a foot behind the winner. Oldfield (2yds) took third place. The latter is rapidly coming to form and promises big things. A Brilliant Performance. A really brilliant performance went to the credit of Miss Campbell In the ladies’ 120yds event. Running off scratch and giving away starts up to ten yards, Miss Campbell won on her merits. Misses Crozier, Adams and Tooman were prominent in the early stages and Miss Burns and Miss Reekie looked possibilities, hut Miss Campbell finished like a train.to take

I lie honours, with Miss Reekie (4yds) and Miss Tooman (G-Jycls) in the places. It was most unfortunate that I no time was taken in this event, but ! taking a line through Miss Reekie's j performances in the Auckland chamj pionships last year the writer would j pick Miss Campbell to have a great j chance for the Auckland title. Miss 1 Reekie may be still below her best I on account of a recent operation, hut | nevertheless offered stout opposition | after an unusually slow beginning. Miss I Tooman is improving with every race I and will soon lake a trick.

Soper (30yds) attempted lo make a one man race of the junior 440 yards, hut. had to survive a sfrong run by Krkell (10yds) to finally gain first place. The Buckingham Brothers led out, hut Soper dashed to (lie lend after 100yds and quickly opened up a gap. At .‘IOO yards Soper led from' Reg. Buckingham (40yds) with Erkeil coming fast. Sopor was all in at Urn finish, hut, lasted long enough to beat Krkell by a yard with Reg Buckingham in third place. The latter lad has a good style and will improve iiriiiii'iisely. Soper must have decided l!i,it. to heal. Krkell ho would need a lead in the straight, and that was how Uifl rate, vwa jiiul. £dxalL save

another of the confident displays we have come to expect of him. A Great Tussle. The senior 440yds was noteworthy for a great tussle in the straight. With 200yds to go the field was nicely hunched and all had chances. Into the straight no less than five held good positions and a battle royal began between Pardington, Erkeil, Thompson, Oldfield and Joyes. Pardington finished strongly to win Erkeil third and the scratch man Oldfield fourth. Here again a watch would have been of great interest. Judged on this race the club should be well represented in the 4x4 40yds relay against Auckland technical. The mile was a disappointing race, only five starting and two finishing. J. Armstrong gained another five points for his team with first place, and Henshall took second place. Henshall has an overdue win coming his way shortly.

The high jump standard was only fair, Malcolm and Pardington dividing the honours with Bogun thirdSome marked Improvements were recorded in the Javelin. The winner, J. D.enz, was generally looked upon as a runner only, but displayed great prowess In his first competition with the spear. Joyes improved upon previous displays, his 122 ft 11 Inches being the best throw this season and gaining him second place. Pardington made hts points for the night total 10 with third place In this event and his was another greatly Improved showing. ft !, rjjfCw, Hooker ChallenfitSUDup.

The conditions attached to the Hooker Challenge Cup for Indies’ interhouse relay races are now finalised. The cup will be contested by teams representing shop, ofilce or club. Threo races arc to be runi*,’ Points to count 5, fi and 1, and ths%>olnts leaders after the three races will hold the cup l’nr 12 months. The club will no doubt, provide four miniature cups lo become the property of the winners, so this event will he of great interest later. At present the points are: Hooker and Kingston, 5 points: Y.M.C.A., 7 points; Dairy, 1 point; and two races have yet lo be run at a dale to he decided by the club.
