SOCIAL CREDIT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —That very interesting contributor to the correspondence columns, Mr G. Hunter, aslcs pertinent questions, and so, I take it, \viu not object if I, ill turn, ask him one. Gould he explain how it is that the British Labour Party will have nothing to do with the Douglas doctrines l All the leading Socialist economists, although they faVour State control of banking and allied proposals cannot be induced to accept anything from the Douglas school. Now Why is that? Take men like Keynes and Hobson — they favour State control of the Bank of England and an Investments Board and similar steps, but apparently will have nothing to do with this free credit business. Cole said plainly that the Douglas theory had a .basic weakness, and all the younger men, influenced, 1 suppose,* toy Laski—such as those who contributed to the “ What People Want to Know About Money” volume —simply rule the methods advocated here out of court. Now these men have advanoed views, and so have the leaders of the Labour Party at Home, so why is it, if these particular propoals are so sound, that they will not accept them in any form? It would be interesting to know how Mr Hunter, or any other advocate of social credit, explains this failure of Major Douglas to win dny support in Labour circles in Great Britain.—l am. etc., H. GIRVAN. Hamilton, December 13. ;
