POLO AT MATANGI.
CLUB’S SUCCESSES. SUPPORT FOR NEW GROUND. A successful year’s activity was re® viewed at the annual meeting of the Matangi Polo Club on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr W. R. J. Franklin, presided. Dlr Franklin congratulated the club on its success in wanning the Savila Cup and the Auckland Provincial Gup. He referred to the friendly feeling that had always existed between members.
Mr A. L. Yule also congratulated the club on its success in winning the Savile Gup and spoke of the endeavours that had been made to' hold the Savile Cup tourney in the Waikato. It was decided to play this tournament in tiie Waikato in 1914, but the war Intervened and it was not until 21 years later that the tournament was actually played here. There was now an assurance that the tournament would he held in the Waikato every fourth year, providing a suitable ground was available, lie considered it essential in the interests of polo that the new ground at Claudelands should be proceeded with, and stated that if the townspeople of Hamilton realised what it would mean lo Ihe town, no difficulty would be experienced in raising tiie necessary funds. The balance-sheet showed that the year closed with a deficit of £4 13s 2d. Mr G. de Vere Chitty mentioned that the grass seed for the polo ground had been donated by Mr R. Holmes and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Holmes thanking him for his generous offer. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected! —President, Mr W. R. J. Franklin; vice-presidents, Messrs A. L. Yule, A. Miller, H. Windsor, Wynn Brown, A. Pretty, and 11. Robinson; captain, Mr G. de Vere'Chitty; selector, Mr R. H. Townsend; delegates, Messrs Chitty and Townsend; secretary, Mr W. L. Ranstead. Some discussion took place in regard lo tiie new central ground at Claudelands, and the secretary read the draft agreement between the Polo Association, the Trotting Association and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The members expressed their satisfaction with the prospect of a central ground being established and it was finally decided that the club should guarantee a donation of £1 for each paying member. Tiie question of sending teams to Fcilding to defend tiie cups won at the last Savile Cup tournament was considered and it was decided to conduct a campaign for raising funds for this purpose.
