RETURN FROM ANTARCTIC. "THE WORK WAS TOUGH.” United Press Assn'. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. SYDNEY, Sept. 25. Francis W. Smoothy and Cecil Melrose, the two New Zealand youths who went with the Byrd expedition to the Antarctic, reached Sydney yesterday by the freighter Ashburton, on their way home. They said they had had a great experience, hut the work was lough.
Cecil Melrose, of Christchurch, and Francis Smoothy, of Milton, were reported in July to be stranded in New York. They joined the Byrd Antarctic Expedition at wages of one penny a month in order To see the world. They were discharged at the end of June with 12 dollars between them.' The 60 days allowed for their stay in the United States having expired they were faced wit hdeportation, hut on hearing of their plight the management of the expedition arranged for them to be sent back to New Zealand.
