DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY IN AUOKLAND. DEFEAT OF H. FOW. The surprise of the flrsj, day’s play in tile New Zealand badminton championship tournament which is being played in Auckland was the sensational defeat of 11. Fow, of Hamilton. Fow, w r ho holds the New Zealand, North Island and Auckland titles was defeated by J. Anderson, of Auckland, who in 'the Anal set, recovered from 5—12 to win 18 —15. Dempster (Hamilton) played excellent badminton to beat Reid (Wellington). The Wellington man had the lead practically throughout but Dempster played determinedly and recovered in the three sets. Bryant (Hamilton) was narrowly defeated by tylartln (Auckland). In the doubles Bryant and Dempster were just beaten in three close games by Heaton and Wood. H. Fow and Mrs Fow were fully extended in the combined doubles to beat Bidyard and Miss Smith, but Neale and Miss A. Ellett and I. Ellett and Miss K. Waters had easy wins. The following are the results of the matches in which Waikato players participated:— 'Men’s Singles.—Anderson beat Fow, 9 —15, 15—5, 18—15; Dempster beat .Reid, 10—15, 17—14, 18—15; Martin beat Bryant, 15 —9, 9 —15, 15—4. Men’s Doubles. —Heaton and Wood beat Bryant and Dempster, B—ls,8 —15, 15—11, 15—9. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Edmondson beat Mrs Salisbury, 11 —1, 11—1. Combined Doubles.—Fow and Mrs Fow beat Ridyard and Miss Smith, 15—8, 9—15, 15—5.
