OPIUM SUSPECTED.
A MYSTERIOUS BOX. RAILWAY STATION INCIDENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The accidental breaking of a butlerbox at tho Tliormlou railway station to-day revealed, not, butler but tins marked with Chinese character's and tilled with a dark viscous substance. The railway authorities, whose suspicions were aroused, advised the Customs Department, who in turn notified the police. Detectives were quickly on I lie scene and they set. a walcli for Hie claimants of the box. Two men duly arrived, signed for Ibo box and paid the freight charge. The detectives stepped forward and requested an interview at the police station. The men, when questioned, denied that the sticky substance was opium and declared that it was treacle. r i'he men continued lo insist that Hie tins contained only 'treacle. Eventually an official was induced to taste the contents of one of (lie tins. It proved to toe common household treacle. There is now considerable speculation as to the destination of the treacle and the reason l'or its strange packing.
