BADMINTON

WAIKATO ASSOCIATION.

INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS.

AUCKLAND 'PROVINCIAL TITLES

BLEDISLOE HALL NEXT WEEK

(By “Sideline”.)

This week saw’ the close of the A. and C. grade inter-club competitions, the Hamilton Club winning -both, sections. The Hamilton A. team deserved their win and there is no doubt that they were definitely the .best team. Their greatest strength was the evenness of Ihe players filling the various positions. The St. Marks team finished second, their only losses being against Hamilton, although they had two narrow wins against Morrinsville —one by 7 games to o and the second by points after the games were 6 all. West End were third with two wins, both of them being at the expense of Morrinsville. The latter team must be considered the unluckiest in the competition, nothing going right for them the whole season. At the beginning they did not have a hall to play in and although they had a building under offer it was not. until the end of July that they were able to get possession. Tho lack of practice undoubtedly affected their chances but it is pleasing to know that they arc now going full swing and that some of their members are competing in the Auckland championships. Auckland Championships. The Auckland championships, commencing in the Bledisloc Hall, Hamilton, next Thursday, should be a fitting climax to what has probably been the most successful season the Waikato Association has experienced. Just how high the standard of play will be might be shown by the fact that G. Martin, the 1932 New Zealand singles champion. T. Ellett, the 1933 New Zealand singles champion, and H. Fow, the 1934 New Zealand singles champion, will be competing. As the New Zealand championships are being held in Auckland the following week the form of competitors will probably have some bearing on the results for the latter tournament. Other prominent players- who will be contesting the singles are J. Neale, who will be remembered for his close match with Barnett in the AucklandWaikato match a few weeks ago. As Barnett is competing another meeting of these two players should prove interesting. Apart from Fow, Waikato will have a strong representation in Barnett, Mallett, Dempster and Bryant, all of whom are capable of upsetting some of the other players. At the time of writing it was not certain whether M. J. Wilson, the present title-holder, or any of the leading southern players would he competing. Strong Ladles’ Contingent. A strong contingent of Auckland ladies will be competing. Miss D. Ellett, the present Auckland and New Zealand ladies singles champion, should prove quite an attraction and as Miss J. Ramsay is making the trip it would give Waikato enthusiasts quite a treat if these two were to meet. Miss M. Wade, Mrs P. Wren, and Miss K. Waters are all making the trip so that the ladies’ section should be quite up to New Zealand standard. This will give the Waikato ladies quite a formidable task in gaining any of the titles. With such talent available the tournament committee is sparing no effort to ensure all arrangements are of the highest order. Two splendid dressingrooms are available for the players, and a ladies’ committee will attend to their requirements as regards refreshments. A special court is being arranged for the outstanding matches and spectators will have every opportunity for watching the various games in comfort.
