BOROUGH COUNCIL.
TECHNICAL BOARD’S REQUEST, GENERAL BUSINESS. The Hamilton Borough Council, met last evening, the Mayor, Mr J.| R. Fow, presiding. Also present were Messrs W. Bourne, A. J. Denz, G. Lafferty, A. M. Bisley, W. W. Dillicar, H. M. Hammond, W. A. Curteis, R. McCaw, J. E. Tidd, F. Findlay, F. Best, and the borough officers. Leave of absence was granted Mr H. D. Caro. The council’s assistance in the drainage of the recently-acquired playing area In Mill Street was sought by the Board of Managers of the Hamilton Technical High School. It was stated that the board believed that the water running into the gully was collected from the borough street channels in the nelghbourhod and was diverted into the gully. Under the circumstances the board felt that the council should be prepared to assist to some extent in defraying the cost entailed in piping.—The letter was* received. Hamilton East Suggestion. A request was received from th Hamilton East Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association, asking the council to consider making the cost of the j construction of footpath crossings over kerbings and channelling a charge against the general rates.—The communication was referred to the Trading and Finance Committee. Water for Saleyards. In reply to a request from the Waikato Central Saleyards Company asking what steps were necessary to enable the company to secure water, supplied by a new main in Frankton at the lowest available rate, the borough engineer stated that there was no immediate prospect of extending the industrial supply to the saleyards area. The saleyards used only about I, gallons per annum and the borough could not offer such low terms as to the Railway Department, even if the main were extended. It was decided to advice the Saleyards Company in terms of the engineer’s report. Other Matters. Mr I. Webster, the electrical engineer, was granted permission to attend the conference of power supply engineers in Wellington on September 9—ii. A request was received from the Waikato Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals asking to have i the dog registrar’s residence connect- £ ed by telephone. Frequently it was stated, the society was asked to collect stray dogs and delay was caused as the result of a lack of communication with the registrar except by letter.-? 1 - The matter was left in the hands of the town clerk to make inquiries regarding the cost and to report to the council. Permission was granted Mr S. E. West, of the borough engineering staff, to assist the Hawera Borough Council with urgent work recommended by Mr R. Worley. The Trading and Finance Committee reported that it had no recommendation to make regarding a proposal submitted by Mr Marcus James, that the council should introduce a systew of municipal currency.
