LIFE-SAVING WORK.
PROVISION OF FACILITIES. BOROUGH COUNCIL CONCERNED. The need for adequate life saving .’quipment lo avoid drowning tragedies such ns occurred in Iho Waikato River at 'Hamilton recently was emphasised at tho meeting of the Borough Council last evening. The matter was raised by Mr 11. M. Hammond, who considered some effort should be made, either to police llic river or provide a boat or raft for rescue work.
The Mayor. Mr .T. R. Fow, pointed out. that a life saving corps had been started in the town and an experienced man would, lie understood, he taking charge. He believed reels and lines at. the foot of each street leading to the river would be highly desirable. Tho council could well subsidise a scheme of this nature.. A further suggestion that, a boat for life saving purposes should be placed at, the fool of London street was advanced by Mr A. M. Risley. He agreed with the Mayor’s suggestion regarding the need for life-lines and reels. •rnc question was referred to Ihe General Purposes Commit lee. It was decided to place on record the council’s appreciation of the valuable services of the late Constable C. H. Williams and of Mr G. Clark, in connection with the recent effort lo save Hie life of a young woman.
