PIANO RECITAL,
BY MB LLOYD POWELL
A DELIGHTFUL EVENING
«“jQno of the most pleasant evenings #V(Sc!'6pent‘ ; by; music-lovers in Ham--11 top"was enjoyed last night, when Mr fJToyd Powell,- 'examiner to the Associated BoariC'London, gave a recitaltalk under the auspices of the Music Students’ Association- The Masonic Hall, Claudelands, was crowded. Not only is Mr Powell a brilliant pianist, but his remarks on composers and compositions are very interesting, entertaining and informative, and he has a delightfully informal style. Mr Powell’s contributions covered a wide range and the contrast in periods was fascinating. The first group was devoted to Bach and Handel, the pianist opening with a lanlasie and Fugue by Bach, followed by a Theme and Variations by Handel, arrangements of old English airs, and Bach Chorales, and Preludes. A- Chopin group followed, including tpe lovely Ballade in A Flat, Etudes, Maaurka and Waltz in A. Flat. Mr Cowell plays Chopin particularly well, and this group was keenly enjoyed. Some modern compositions, several Of'them not previously heard in Hamilton, proved very interesllng and Stimulating, illustrating, as they did, the present-day trend in music. “ The Gold Fish,” by Debussy, opened the group, and this was followed by compositions by some of the younger Russians and Hungarians, and a Prelude by Rachmaninoff. In response to requests from the audience Mr Powell augmented his programme by playing a Handel Fantasie, a Chopin Etude, and an arrangement by Liszt of Schubert waltzes, present were sorry when the redial-talk ended.
