PUKEMIRO NEWS

SOCIAL EVENING. A social was held recently in the Miners’ Hall, Pukemiro, (by the Women’s Institute, in the form of a presentation to Mr Carr, headmaster of tho Pukemiro School, and 'Mrs Carr Mr Burt, manager of the Pukemiro Collieries, made the presentation of a chiming clock to 'Mr Carr, a case of fish knives and forks to Mrs Carr, and a fountain pen to Master S. Carr. Mr Carr suitably thanked the residents of Pukemiro, Glen Afton and the mine for their generous gifts. Mr Carr will take up -his new duites in Auckland. The Elite Orchestra played excellent music. . During the evening -competitions were won by Mrs Marlin and Mrs Allsop. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr T.. Mitchell and partner,-and the Misses -Henderson and Thomas. Anglican Guild Function. The Anglican Guild held their weekly whist party on Thursday, the winners being Mrs Simpson and Mr Robinson. Surprise Party. An enjoyable evening was spent when a surprise -party to Mr and Mrs Barr, who are leaving the district, was held. A .presentation was m r ade to Mrs Barr of a rose-bowl, and a -set of jugs and fruit dish, and a pipe to Mr Barr. Games were much enjoyed. The winners of the musical parcels were Mr-s Fleming .and Mr McTaggart. Songs were given 'by Mr Drinnan and Mesdames Barr, Drinnan, and Robinson.- The singing of “ Auld Lang Syne” -brought a -happy evening to a close.
