WAR MANOEUVRES

UNITED STATES ARMY. 76,000 TROOPS CONCENTRATE. DEFENCE OF THE) SEABOARD. United Press Assn,—Elec. Tel. Copyright NEW YORK, August 19. Tiie north-eastern section of the United States, comprising (lie Stales of New' England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, became a war zone to-day, as 75,000 troops concentrated on strategic points, prepared to repel the enemy. Of course, all this was Imaginary, but the military authorities are taking the manoeuvres most seriously, on the theory that if the country is ever attacked the Atlantic side and the wealthy north-eastern industrial area will most likely ho the chief objective of the enemy. Conditions simulating war as nearly as possible have been invoked during the manoeuvres, which are on the largest scale in America's peace-time history. \ 7 Hundreds of tanks, armoured cars, mobile machine-gun units, heavy artillery, and aeroplanes, have been concentrated in the “ war zone " within tho last few days* Two thousand five hundred taxicabs, impressed into Hie transport service here, moved an entire division of 8000 men to a camp 400 miles distant within ten hours.
