Prevalence of Sheep-Stealing. —Mr Justice Reed’s advice to farmers In lire Supreme Court at Napier, to lake slops to have the transport of sheep by lorry at night prevented by law was unnecessary. Mr W. 11. Nicholson, secretary of Iho Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union, said at the annual meeting of Hie union. In 1930, lie said, the Stock Act was amended to make it an offence lo "drive, lead, or convey slock along or across any highway or Crown lands, or lo convey any slock on any river, lake, harbour, or other waters” at night without a permit from a justice, or an auctioneer, postmaster, constable, or inspector under the Slock Act. .The union decided to urge the authorities to make the ponallies fur sheep-stealing more severe, members eommenling that (lie offence was becoming very common in many parts of New Zealand.
