The total value of building permits issued in Hamilton for the year 193435, is the highest for boroughs in the Dominion, while it also compares very favourably with city figures. The sudden revival in the building trade, stimulated, no doubt, by Government 'subsidies, has been a striking illustration of the Dominion’s definite emergence from the slump years, and in no other 'centre has this posiLion been more clearly evident than in Hamilton. In Hamilton the number of new private dwellings was 83, representing a value of £53,635, while the total building value, including new business premises, additions and alterations, amounted to £83,30.1. In Whangarei the number of houses was 23, a value of £15,631, the total value of buildings being £28,129. The following table indicates the value of buildings erectea in some of the different boroughs of the Dominion during the year 1934-35:

These figures exclude the immediate suburbs, the figures given being for the cities proper. In Palmerston North 74 houses were built at a cost of £48,520, this being £5115 below the figure for Hamilton. The total building expenditure at Palmerston North was £88,704. A total of 183 houses at a cost of £180,477 was erected in Wellington City, with a total building cost, of £445,341, the highest in the Dominion.
