THE STRIKE CONTINUES. DECISION OF THE SEAMEN. OWNERS’ UNCHANGED ATTITUDE. MELBOURNE, Aug. 18. As the shipowners are determined not to employ the Murada men until all idle vessels are manned, it is reported that there is no immediate prospect of the seamen’s strike ending, unless by order of the Court at the compulsory conference to he held next Wednesday. At a mass meeting in Melbourne yesterday speakers said they feared the shipowners intended to victimise the Murada men,
It was decided to continue the strike pending a meeting of officers of the Federal executive in Sydney next Tuesday.
Mr F. Clarke, general president of ihe union, said the owners’ terms would not be accepted until an assurance was given that the Murada men would have the right to be selected at the first pick-up. The shipowners issued a statement lo the effect that there is no change in their altitude, which was defined on Friday. SYDNEY, Aug. 18. The Union Steam Ship Company’s Xgakuta, the Adelaide Steamship Company’s freighter Oorama, the Howard Smith collier Period and the freighter Era were added to the list of idle vessels yesterday. 28 VESSELS IDLE.
