(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In reply to “One \Vho Does Pay,” stating that he owns a small farm and pays land tax, I want to say that he is a very fortunate manIn the first case, ho must have'his farm practically clear, because a mortgage as well as the first £SOO is exempt from land tax. Therefore on a 50-acre farm with an unimproved value of £2O per acre tho tax amounts to approximately £2. ' Now, surely “One Who Does Pay” 'cannot think that this is an unfair or crushing taxation. I feel sure that every farmer in New Zealand would gladly pay land tax if he owned a clear farm and had no mortgage to pay off. “•One Who Does Pay” also makes a sarcastio remark about our political leaders joy-riding overseas. ’This remark is evidently direoted at our Minister of Finance, who on his last so-called “joy-ride” saved New Zealand farmers many thousands of pounds. If “One Who Does Pay” had any common sense he would be able to see this for himself Instead of having to have it pointed out to him. My advice to “One Who Does Pay” is to keep on buying fertiliser, as the rebate he mentions amounts to only 2s per year.—l am, etc., SATISFIED ELECTOR. Ohaupo. August 6, 1935. * . J:J
